Our Story

Founded by Dr. Osose Oboh in 2023, Be The Plug is a non-profit organization committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive community for people of color pursuing careers in medicine. Dr. Oboh's vision for Be The Plug was shaped by her extensive experience and leadership. As the National President of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) during the 2020-2021 term—amidst the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic—and also serving on the Board of Trustees of the National Medical Association, she gained unique insights. These critical roles illuminated a profound need for more dedicated touch points and robust support systems for students of color, especially as the pandemic highlighted the urgency for innovation within the virtual space to connect students to community and increase awareness.

Our mission is simple: to build networks that empower, support, and elevate diverse voices in the healthcare field. At Be The Plug, we believe that creating a sense of belonging is essential to professional growth. Through creative programming, mentorship, workshops, and community-building events, we provide individuals with the tools and resources they need to thrive. Our focus is not just on individual success, but on advancing diversity and inclusion within the entire healthcare system.

The Be The Plug leadership team brings decades of experience in creating sustainable programming focused on the pre-medical pipeline. This expertise has translated into significant success in helping students gain access to medical school, increasing feelings of community support and connection, and supporting peers through mental health crises.

We are deeply committed to advocacy, health policy reform, and addressing the systemic barriers that contribute to the lack of diversity in medicine. By supporting pipeline programs, scholarship opportunities, and leadership development for aspiring physicians of color, we aim to create a more equitable and representative healthcare workforce.

Our intentional approach to sponsorship and mentorship helps remove financial and professional obstacles, empowering the next generation of healthcare leaders. Together, we can create an environment where diversity in medicine isn’t just a goal—it’s the standard.
